Black Friday falls the Friday after Thanksgiving, the ‘official’ beginning of the Holiday Season. It is the time when most retailers make the majority of their profits.
Stores stay open for longer periods of time and sales and discounts are everywhere. And of course, although Black Friday is the ‘official’ beginning of the holiday season doesn’t start businesses from advertising early. You’ve probably already seen your fair share of Christmas ads. In fact I saw a car ad the first week of November. The reason is since we’ve experienced such a weak economy retailers want to get an early start. Just don’t get The Black Friday Blues.
The name originated in Philadelphia in the early 60’s because of the increased automotive and pedestrian traffic after Thanksgiving. It started to really spread after 1975 and become more and more popular with retailers ever since. Recently Cyber Black Friday has been added to the chaos. Combined Black Friday and Cyber Black Friday has been known since 2006 as the busiest shopping day of the year.
