…Carolyn Davidson, that’s who.
As Women You Should Know reports, Carolyn was a graphic design student at Portland State University. The year is 1971. A passerby overhears Carolyn opining to a peer that she is having a difficult time affording next semester’s courses. The passerby happens to be a PSU accounting professor, who on the side runs a burgeoning shoe company.
The professor extends a freelance gig to Carolyn to create the Nike Swoosh Logo, and the rest is history.
For those who are concerned about Carolyn’s compensation for her logo work, Nike awarded her a gold ring fashioned like her design…and 500 shares of stock.
Thus concludes a very abridged fairly tale of success and happiness.
